Long Sutton Ladies 1sts come up short in local derby.

Wisbech have been on a strong run which has seen them climb to third place in league 1 North. They started this game with intent and dominated play only allowing Long Sutton occasional breaks. Long Suttons defence however held out and through a combination of battling hard in midfield and through some very determined defending and goalkeeping by Lorraine Walis who pulled off several excellent saves to keep Wisbech out.

Suttons resilliance was the more impressive as they had been forced into changes at the back including Tania White standing in the middle for injured Gemma Parrr and Hanah Greenacre replacing White at right back, both put in good performances and with Sally Cade and Jess Hudson also in good form. Wisbech though in addition to being frustrated by Suttons determined efforts were also guilty of squandering chances. Despite Wisbech plying on the pressure the best scoring chance of the first half fell to Sutton on the half hour, on a rare breakaway following a great run by Jinx Walker which left Leanne Woodhead with the opportunity to give Sutton the lead; but sadly Woodhead misfired.

With the half time score at nil nil the second half followed a similar pattern to the first and with a degree of inevitability Wisbech fluked a first goal 14 minutes into the second half, Claire Apted tucking home the simplest of chances. Not long after opening the scoring then Wisbech notched another scored by Nat Ward. Wisbech completed their tally with a third goal 7 minutes from time this one, the best of the game was scored by Georgie Dunn who neatly beat the adavancing Walis in the Sutton goal. Three nil flattered Wisbech but Long Sutton can take heart from a gritty, backs to the wall and determined performance. Player of the match was Tania White. Martin Hudson had this to comment: "Long Sutton Ladies firsts have a big job to do to remain in this league; destiny is not totally in their own hands as six points from their remaining two fixtures starting at home to St Ives on Saturday and then at home to Harleston Magpies on 6th of April will be enough, that is unless Dereham take all the points from their last game this coming Saturday which is against bottom side Ipswich 3's - so perhaps its advantage Dereham! but you never know in sport - let's win our game against St Ives then we have at least done our job to that point."
