 BOURNE AND DEEPING JYNXED!!!

Long Sutton Ladies 1sts came up against stiff opposition which contradicted league form and table placing; however a last minute winner was enough. Sutton started well, and if short corner counts are an indication of domination  then it was Suttons day. However that only tells part of the tale, as Bourne/Deeping always posed a threat with numerous break away attempts requiring the defence and Suttons keeper Lorraine Wallis to be on guard at all times.

From early play Long Sutton looked the more dangerous and on 6 minutes created a great chance with Leanne Woodhead finding Charlie Leuty who fired a smart shot from just inside the D across goal ,beating the home keeper hands down but sadly the ball pinged against the far post to deny Sutton an early break. Lisa Baker went close on 10 minutes and soon after Sutton won a string of short corners which were defended well by Bourne/Deeping to keep the scores level. In parallel to Suttons power Bourne/Deeping posed their own threat and on 25 minutes forced a great save from Lorraine Wallis. At the opposite end Laura Gwilliam produced a stunning stop to add to Sutton's frustration.

Half time came around with the score somehow still 0-0. The Long Sutton Ladies woke up at half time, and throughout the second half they played better - albeit still playing below par. But to be fair, they were thwarted by a very determined side who were have been motivated by a good win the previous week.

As time ticked the game appeared in Suttons hands but with every opportunity meeting fierce resistance and it became clear a goal either end would decide the day. As it happened, it proved to be Suttons day and their pressure on the home sides defence was rewarded in the 69th minute. Following another short corner routine, Leanne Woodhead was left to move away from the defending  runners to fire a shot which was blocked, but rebounded kindly to the in-form Sarah Walker who calmly slotted the ball into Bourne Deepings goal to secure 3 vital points for Sutton.

Jess Hudson and Rachael Gadsden supported well down the defensive wings, and special note must go to Sally Cade and woman of the match Tania White for their strength to keep a clean sheet against a lively Bourne Deeping who had numerous raids on the Sutton goal.

Sutton did not play at their best, but it is a testament to a side when you can still win when the best is yet to come. Sutton go into the slip week in a comfortable third place, before travelling away to Shefford and Sandy on the 14th of December
