Draw specialists!

Long Sutton Ladies 1sts have now won 6, drawn 6 and lost only one which is the same number of defeats as the top two sides in the league - however the habit of drawing games that are winnable are costing valuable league points and proving the difference at the top of the table.

Long Sutton started really well with good movement and crisp passing causing Alford enormous problems, but despite the early dominance from Suttons play they failed to convert chances coming up against a determined Alford defence, and when Sutton managed to breach defenders they were thwarted by Carol Jacklin in the Alford goal who made several fine saves to keep Sutton out. Sarah Walker, Leanne Woodhead and Lisa Baker went close to giving Sutton a lead before on 25 minutes Tania White broke on the edge of the Alford D and made a smart pass into the path of Hannah Greenacre who lifted the ball neatly over the sprawling keeper and carefully avoiding a crowded defence to strike for Sutton. Half time and advantage Long Sutton Ladies 1sts, 1 goal to nil.

The second half started in a similar pattern but gradually Alford gained a greater share of the possession and pressed harder in the Long Sutton defensive half and with Sutton finding it more difficult to relieve the pressure. Suttons in form keeper Lorraine Wallis came to the rescue several times to maintain the visitors slender advantage and Suttons defence and midfield were working overtime, but containing the danger until five minutes before the end when Vicky Allen stroked the ball home to level things for Alford. Over the course of the second half Long Sutton had chances to take a 2 goal lead which most likely would have killed Alford off, but failure to hit the target provided the lifeline for Alford who when the chance came took it to gain the draw.

Player of the match for Long Sutton was Jessica Hudson for her hard tackling, strong passing and aggressive attack play.

Next Saturday Long Sutton travel to Lincoln looking for a win to stay third in East league NW2 and with an eye still on leaders Letchworth and second placed Bedford both who they still have to play.
