Long Sutton Ladies 1sts won their final game of the 2013/14 season against Bourne & Deeping and in so doing achieved their third double of the season. Long Sutton knew that to secure fourth place then nothing less than a win would do and at the same time any slip on the day then their final position would have hung in the balance a further week until Shefford and Sandy with a game in hand would complete their fixtures; but as a consequence of Suttons win, no such wait is necessary and we can celebrate a good respectable fourth placing out of a tough league - well done to the entire squad!

So back to the game and, although the score line defines a win by the narrowest of margins, the game itself was a different story. Sutton in the main bossed the game through a well disciplined team performance played at a very high tempo. Long Sutton started well against a Bourne Deeping side who shaped up in a defensive system clearly aimed at survival and this made it difficult for Sutton to penetrate the heavily manned defence and defensive midfield. Soon into the game unfortunately Sutton lost the services of Louise Southgate who had to withdraw through injury. Suttons first opportunity came as Jeorgia Carr dribbled with pace through the middle and forced a short corner which was subsequently blocked away. Soon after, Leanne Woodhead went close as did Sarah Walker and then after Lisa Baker missed from close range it was becoming clear the fine kitty for goal avoidance would swell more or less every five minutes! However whilst Sutton continued to look comfortable it was not without incidence on the home goal as Sutton keeper Lorraine Wallis was called upon to make several smart saves from the occasional Bourne & Deeping attacking raids, that otherwise were all being well managed by the combination at the back of Rachael Gadsden, Gemma Parr, Sally Cade and ever present Jess Hudson who had played in every league game of this season. In midfield, Walker, Charlie Leuty and Tania White linked well and pressed forward sensibly as Hannah Greenacre provided good width on the right.

So that was the Good phase out and Sutton needed to be even better and they did manage to ramp up the tempo even further either side of half time providing for the scoring opportunities to come even more frequently however leading to the same outcomes and frustrations as Sutton tried to unpick Bourne & Deepings tight defence. Greenacre was now exposing the opposition defence providing good speed down the right, however the numerous chances that continued to be created were either sliding just wide of either posts or being blocked in the Bourne & Deeping D or scrambled away off the line. All very exciting but sadly fruitless.

So scores still level but with Long Sutton throwing everything into the game it was beginning to appear like the harder you try the less you get out! The short corner awards were now heavily mounting in Suttons favour signalling that we were  enjoying dominance and the best stage of the game and so with 12 minutes remaining Sutton made a subtle tactical change to try something different, so bringing Gadsden back on - but not in defence but as an extra striker playing up front alongside Woodhead; and it very quickly worked! Gadsden in an early touch powered forward evading defenders then forced the ball into the path of Captain Woodhead who slipped the ball away from her marker then pushed the ball right at exactly the required pace to round the advancing goalkeeper thus finding the angle to calmly fire home to make the deserved break through. Sutton continued to pile on the pressure to ensure the win and with Baker who had a great game having a further strike blocked before Gadsden then found good space but just failed to find the finish.

So a win, a well deserved win at that and job done, in parallel by keeping Bourne & Deeping off the score sheet this took Long Sutton to their seventh shut out of the league season - a 33% block out record and being a credit in no small part to  keeper Lorraine Wallis and a well drilled team.

Player of the match was Charlie Leuty who kept up her 100% league game record and who on the day was a constant thorn in the Bourne & Deepings side.
