SUTTON SLAY SPALDING!

HA CUP Round 1
Long Sutton mens 1st 6 v 3 Spalding mens 1sts

Sutton shrugged off their league defeat on Saturday to give local rivals Spalding a good thumping in the HA Cup. Sutton started well and put Spalding under immense pressure. The first 15 minutes were played in the Spalding half where Sutton created chance after chance. It was only Spaldings keeper stopping them going in front Sutton were playing fast, fluent hockey which Spalding couldn't cope with. Spalding tried to counter attack but Gavaghan, Taylor, Baguley and Whatling were solid. The inevitable happened and Sutton opened the scoring through Sisson. Sutton continued to spray the ball round and added a second, a thunderbolt from Fyson from a penalty corner. Hales then got in on the act adding a third and soon after Sisson added his second to make it 4. Spalding snatched one back from a penalty corner. Half time was 4-1 but Sutton were aggrieved they hadn't doubled their score with all the chances they had. The second half saw Spalding come at Sutton but Harrison and Shore soon started to control things again. Bailey was making all kind of awkward runs creating problems for Spalding and Ellis was flying down the wing supported well by Batten. Spalding just tried the long ball from defence to attack as they struggled to get any foot hold in the game. Sisson completed his hat trick and then Hales scorched the underside of the bar and into the goal to make it 6. Spalding hit back with a goal as Sutton lapsed concentration for a few moments and then added a third from a penalty flick. However, Sutton should have had double figures as they completely dominated the game from start to finish and gave the spectators a great team show.
