MATCH REPORT
LSHC Mens' Second v St Neots 1sts
Played Home on 21st September 2013The 2nds started their 3NW campaign with a well crafted 2-0 win against a well drilled St Neots squad. With only 5 regulars from last seasons promotion winning side available to captain Matt Holmes, it looked like it could be a tough baptism, however with Jeremy Watt, Jamie Featherstone and Ross Gavaghan providing an intelligent strong base to build from and Otto Esse putting in a very impressive man of the match performance in the midfield playmaker role Sutton came through with a 2-0 victory, which indeed could have been more.
Starting strongly, the home side pressurised the St Neots goal and after a spell of concerted pressure Watt combined with Esse, who then finished well to give Sutton the lead. St Neots were restricted to the odd chance from counter attacks and the rare defensive mistake and it was a little disappointing that the score was only 1-0 at half time.
The pattern of the play continued in the 2nd half and soon the score was 2-0, after some good play resulted in John Sullivan rolling back the years and finishing with style. Chances came and went and after an injury to Featherstone and a first career yellow card for Alex Canham reduced Sutton to 10 men the side professionally closed out the game to ensure all 3 points were won.
All round a satisfactory performance from an unfamiliar 2nds side in their first game at this higher level.
