After a perfect start to the new season, Sutton were looking forward to battling with the top teams in the division. On that front, they looked forward to their first test this weekend.

Sutton were the ones to start out of the blocks slowly, with Cambridge pushing high from the off pinning Sutton into their own half. Little came from Sutton in the first half, opportunities were missed and rarely broke the deadlock of the Cambridge backline. However some solid defending from Adam Taylor and Suttons back line saw chances from Cambridge slip away. Most of the credit has to go Man of the Match Lovegrove who stopped everything to keep Cambridge out. Shortly before the break, Sutton conceded a penalty flick which was saved with a flying save by Lovegrove which  Gordon Banks would have been proud of. The score remained 0 – 0 at half time.

Sutton again started slowly out of the blocks and very shortly conceded a well worked goal by Cambridge. This then turned into 2 with again some sloppy play from Sutton handing the ball over cheaply and giving Cambridge and easy tap in. After that moment Sutton decided to raise their game a gear which put Cambridge under pressure at the back. But against the run of play Cambridge nabbed a short corner which saw Taylor yellow carded for dissent. Sutton fought back and with Mallet, Wiles, Mountney and Watt all pulling together in the midfield, Canham, Fox and Shore could finally stretch their legs and make the runs and create the space needed. This lead to some fantastic play to create two short corners consecutively from which the second was dispatched by Shore to close the gap. With little time left on the clock, Sutton threw everything at Cambridge, but couldn't get an equaliser.  Cambridge were rightly so the best team on the day and deserved the points but none the less a great spirited performance by Sutton.
