Long Sutton 2nd XI hosted local rivals Wisbech this week to conclude the first season in 3NW, proving that they were worthy champions of 4NW last season by finishing in a comfortable 5th in the table. This was also the final game at the helm for skipper for Matt Holmes who steps down from capacity.

Both teams started the first half with a lack of vigour but Sutton always looked the most dangerous on the ball, some positional changes in the top half of the pitch proved effect with Sutton going into the break 2-0 up with goals from Ben Shore and Adam Wiles. However Wisbech were not without chances and Sutton needed to be sure they didn't get caught with their guard down. A couple of shots from Wisbech were sent wide of the goal,  proving that Sutton's defence was not impenetrable.

After the team talk at half time, Sutton came out with more purpose and it showed in the hockey being played, with the whole of the squad linking up and pulling Wisbech apart. The goals were free-flowing, with the midfield linking creatively with the various pairings upfront, leaving Wisbech keeper James Sheppard to make some critical and sometimes outrageous saves. Excellent teamwork, good communication and a determination to make sure that skipper Holmes was not disappointed in his last game as skipper all helped contribute to the outstanding team performance, that resulted in a 9 (Nine) - 0 victory for the Green Army. The goals were all well worked, with 4 goals for occasional player Nick Bailey, 2 from Ben Shore, and one each for Jeremy Watt, Adam Wiles and Nick Ellis on his second team debut. But credit must also go to the defence of Adam Taylor, Matt Holmes, Ed White, Sam Grey, James Cliff and Man of the Match Jason Mallet who - even when it seemed certain that Wisbech would score - somehow denied them their consolation goal.

Skipper Holmes said "It's been a privilege and an honour to captain and play with a great bunch of lads and a team of players that have worked hard for each other, myself and the club. To gain 5th place this season after winning the league title and promotion last season is one thing, but to also have been in the final 4 in the England Hockey plate all in the last two seasons is absolutely amazing. Thank you all"
