Were Sutton about to make their debut cup game a winning one?

Sutton made a slow start to the game coming close to conceding to some well worked play by St Ives, who had beaten Sutton twice last season. Sutton had chances with some intricate play by Fyson in the midfield. Sutton were soon woken up mid way through the first half, by a well worked St Ives goal. This gave Sutton the momentum to speed up the play, with some crisp passing and great leading runs which lead to Ed White to put a rocket shot passed the goal keepers ear. The game tightened up and no more goals came in the first half.

A rallying team talk from Matt Holmes at half time gave the Sutton side the belief that they could win the game through doing the basics well. The second half whistle went and within a few minutes St Ives capitalised on some sloppy Sutton play to create a tap in goal to leave Sutton bemused after the break. Sutton then decided to play creating more chances as the game went on. After some great running play by Batten, Ed picked the ball at the top of the D and fired home a bottom corner goal to level things up again for Sutton.

Though again this was short lived as St Ives picked their game up and scored 2 more within quick succession. At this point St Ives had though they had won the game and dropped further into their own half, which gave Fyson some running room, to get into the D to pick out a trademark reverse stick shot which hit the bottom corner. This didn't give much warning to St Ives though as Sutton piled forwards to try and take the game further. Some fantastic play by Fyson again saw him enter the D and again hit a reverse stick strike which would have taken the game to extra time, only to then find the whistle had already gone for an earlier offence for which a short corner was given. Sutton couldn't capitalise on the St Ives mistake which left minutes on the clock for Sutton to try and find the equalizer. Sadly this was not Sutton's day and St Ives came out close winners leaving Sutton to go into the plate.

Sutton now await their fate to see where they will be heading next.
