Two soft early goals and two soft late goals sandwiched a really encouraging performance from Sutton's development side. They paraded the club's depth of talent with two debutants, who both did themselves proud: Charlie Hill in goal played with calm maturity and John Goodley at right back demonstrated his youthful exuberance. Sutton's best hope for goals once again appeared to be the hard-running Kane Portass, but it was Dan Oldfield who capped a good game with a tidy finish from Will White's right wing cross. Leadenham's pace was Sutton's undoing, and as the game got stretched towards the end, they got in behind the visitors' otherwise exemplary marking to expose the novice ‘keeper.

There is a certain alchemy in creating a team that performs better than the sum of its parts which this season's version of the fourths have not discovered yet. There is also an unforgiving physicality to this division and our mix of three over 40s and eight under sixteens (four of them aged thirteen), is not the most favourable balance either. However, if talent, application and enjoyment will get you anywhere, this bunch of youngsters will go far.
