Long Sutton Ladies 1sts so close to victory!

This game produced a stunning performance from Long Sutton Ladies 1st's who were unlucky not to have taken the three points. Long Sutton started well and with Robyn Gribble and Emma Howell tormenting the Dereham defence. Sutton were denied a clear penalty flick after a goal bound effort from Leanne Woodhead was stopped on the Dereham goal line by a Dereham defenders foot however the umpire only awarded a short corner which Sutton failed to convert. Both teams played adventurous attacking Hockey and only strong defensive and mid field play from both the teams kept it scoreless. Charlene Leuty was particularily impressive.

The second half saw Long Sutton step up a gear and. Leanne Woodhead, Emma Howell and Kate Ireland went close before Sutton broke the deadlock with 12 minutes to go. Kate Ireland neatly deflecting in to make it advantage Long Sutton. Soon after a chance to increase the lead was missed giving Dereham some hope of saving the game. Late on Sutton conceded a needless short corner which Dereham converted with a deflection from close in. Sadly this left Sutton with little time to get a second goal for what would have been a well deserved win. Long Sutton go to Wisbech on Saturday with a win required to climb away from fourth from bottom which is the last relegation spot. Player of the match was left back Jess Hudson.
