Mens 1st XI vs St Ives 1

Sutton make it back-to-back wins with trip to St Ives

Sutton travelled to St Ives this week with an unchanged side from the week prior. Spirits were high off the back of a win and the lads were keen to do the same again knowing this was a good chance for points. However, Sutton's record against bottom table clubs through history has been uneasy so we knew this was never going to be a given.

The game started with St Ives enjoying slightly more of the ball as Sutton eased into the game. The defence of Oldfield, Harrison, Baguley and Proctor was resolute and Ives never looked a threat. The first goal came from a line ball from Ellis to Baker with the later then finding the run of Fyson. A burst of pace from Baker gave him space in the circle to receive from Fyson and tap home the opener. 1-0. The first half continued in similar fashion with Sutton growing in confidence and coming very close on several occasions and nearly converting a couple of several corners. HT 1-0

The second half went along the same page for Sutton. More solid defending, snuffing out all home attacks. The midfield of Gray, Ibrahim and East were working non stop and it was their hard work that would bring about the second of the day. Ibrahim found Baker out wide to the right who, with patience on the ball found the central run of East who moved the ball quickly left to Fyson inside the circle to hammer home his first of the season. More chances came and went for Sutton with both flank-men Batten and Sargeant coming close but it was that man Fyson who would come up with the third to make up his brace. Baker found himself on the ball in the middle of the park and a clever lofted pass found Fyson high up the pitch who, from a similar position to his first, fired the ball into the roof of the net.

St Ives were down and out but, as the game looked like finishing 3-0, a bobbling ball into the circle found an Ives player who tapped a ball round Cliff between the sticks. A harsh end for the man that had been so unlucky not to have 2 clean sheets to his name now in 2025.
