What a start to the 2025/2026 Season!
Sutton faced the first league game of the season in Div 4NW, although it was against familiar foe, being Cambs City 7’s who were promoted along with Sutton last year.
City arrived with 11 players and no goalkeeper but Sutton were not lulled into a false sense of security as 9 players and no goalkeeper was enough to easily see off Sutton last season.
Sutton had a great squad of 15 and knew that from the outset they would need to use all players if they were to get something out of this game. Sutton were put under pressure from the off but a solid defence of Warby, Fox Skate and Grosvenor were in no mood to give anything away. Fox in particular having her most solid game ever.
As Sutton settle the midfield of Perowne, Whittaker and Tegerdine looked to link the play from the defence to the forwards of Blundy-Gent, Giles and Gaborit-Carter. It was from the best move of the game the ball found its way from defence to Tegerdine who played a quick ball down the line for Gaborit-Carter who drove at the heart of the City defence before playing a super ball towards goal for Giles to smash home. Sutton 1-0 up.
From that moment it was back to the wall stuff with Canham, Whittaker(A) Clarke (S) and Clarke (L) swapping in to keep the energy high.
Although City pressed and pressed, it was not until 4 minutes from the end that they were able to breach the resolute Sutton and the game ended 1-1. A point, just reward, for a solid afternoon at the office.
POTM votes went to a number of players, all of whom would have been deserved winners but in the end it was Gaborit-Carter who took the accolade for a great performance.
