Womens 2nd XI vs St Ives 3s

Long Sutton ladies 2’s travelled to St Ives for a late game under the lights

The improvement in this team has been clear to see and they finally got the rewards their efforts deserved.

Sutton started brightly and played much higher up the pitch to put pressure on St Ives. Jasmin and Lisa combining well up front as the two lone strikers. A fierce strike from Lisa finding the corner to take Sutton into an early lead. St Ives were quick on the break however and a quick move down Suttons right found Sutton light in defence and the equaliser came shortly after. Sutton did not let their heads drop and continued to put pressure on St Ives. The defence of Tania Sarah and Julie with Emma thwarting any further breaks. With a midfield 4 of Alison Katie Lillie and Lexi Sutton were able to move the ball well looking to play in triangles around the opposition. Sophie Clarke was called upon and kept Sutton level with a fabulous stretch for a ball destined for the left hand corner. Both Lily and Wendy were called upon to keep the tempo high and Sutton were able to earn a couple of short corners, however they couldn’t extend their lead. Halftime 1-1

Sophie was keen to stress at half-time that Sutton had not conceded a short-corner during the half. Surely a jinx! So it proved with St Ives earning their first minutes into the second half! Fear not Sutton defended resolutely.

The game became end to end. St Ives did create chances and maybe were a little unfortunate not to take the lead when a shot hit the post however Sophie looked unconcerned in goal clearly knowing that she had it covered

With a little over 5mins left a break from Sutton saw the ball moved quickly to Lisa who drove down the right entering the D,along the baseline. Although initially looking to draw a short corner she looked up to see Jasmin, having made a super run, on the P spot and made the pass. Jasmin kept her cool and calmly slotted the ball in. 2-1.

Sutton saw out the final minutes of the game to earn their first win of the season. One which was thoroughly deserved.

Every single player contributed to the win with a number of super performances but the out and out winner of the vote was Jasmin who had a fantastic game, not for the first time this season
